Spanish Mastiff
The Spanish Mastiff is a very large sheep dog originating in Spain that was bred to defend livestock from wolves and other predators.
The Spanish Mastiff is looks like other Mastiff breeds with a large powerful head, loose folds of skin and a double dewlap on the neck, but has a long muzzle compared to many other mastiffs. It has small eyes and drop ears resembling triangles. This dog's coat is most often reddish or fawn-colored, but can also be brindle, black or 'wolf' colored .Males are 30+ inches tall at the withers, and range from 50-65 kg (140-200+ lbs). Females are 28 inches in height and weigh 50-60 kg (110-130 lbs).
The Spanish Mastiff is protective of its owners and their property. While not typically affectionate, they will follow their owners around. That is not to say that they are obedient. They have been known to ignore their owners and attack visitors. They do, however, give strong warnings before attacking unlike some other guard dogs. They will attack unwelcome guests.
The Spanish Mastiff will act lazy, but are always alert. Without extensive training and socialization from a very early age, Spanish Mastiffs will be aggressive and will not trust most dogs or people. Because they are a very dominant breed, they need a good leader. They will do well around familiar people and animals, but are definitely not trustworthy around new people or animals.
The Spanish Mastiff can live to between 10 to 14 years.
