Polish Tatra Sheepdog
The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is a breed of large dog (45-60KG/100-150 pounds, 20-28 inches in height) introduced into the Tatra Mountain region of Southern Poland by Wallachian shepherds, probably in the 14th Century, and used to guard and herd sheep. Tatras generally do not attack predators but stand their ground.
The Tatras are white with heavy dense fur and are very similar in appearance and temperament to the Pyrenean Mountain Dog and the Hungarian Kuvasz.
This hardy breed is courageous, lively, alert and highly intelligent. He is an agile, swift runner. He is naturally gentle and calm and must never be treated harshly. Loyal to his owner and affectionate with children, he watches over his territory and family. Independent and self-thinking the Tatra is able to assess situations without human guidance. Tatra are good companion dogs.
Tatras do require daily exercise and grooming. They shed their undercoat profusely twice a year and must be brushed and groomed. If the dog is kept indoors it will shed year round. It stays clean even when shedding due to its self cleaning coat. Tatras Dry mouthed does not drool. Teeth, ears and nails must be tended to weekly.
The Polish Tatra Sheepdog lifespan is 10- 12 years.
