Great Pyrenees
The Pyrenean Mountain Dog, known as the Great Pyrenees in the U.S., is a large, very old breed of dog used as a livestock guardian dog by shepherds in the Basque region in and around the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France and northern Spain.
Males grow to between 110-120 pounds (50-54 kg) and 27-32 inches (69-81 cm) with females smaller on both counts. Their coats are white and can have varying shades of gray, red (rust), or tan around the face (including a full face mask), ears and sometimes on the body and tail.
The Great Pyrenees is, as would be expected, an excellent guard dog, but they are also a good family dog being devoted, gentle and affectionate, loyal and obedient. Normally calm and well- mannered they can become aggressive and protective when provoked. Great Pyrenees are independent by nature and require a strong pack leader. They do best with children when raised with them. They are also good with cats and other animals. Great Pyrenees are vocal.
They need moderate exercise, a daily walk and space to run in a yard to remain balanced and healthy. Great Pyrenees live 10-12 years.
